Climb Aboard!

Take a short ride on our historic cabooses for an educational experience aboard our Yard Goat Demonstration Train! Learn what it took in the golden age of railroading to keep the busy train yards operating like clockwork when the little switcher engines, known as “yard goats,” worked tirelessly around the clock that continues to this very day.

Event Features

Board the train at the SRI Welcome Center for an approximate 10 to 15-minute, round trip through our yard to the historic New Buffalo Turntable and back. The highlight of course is a ride on the turntable itself! Don’t get too dizzy!

Historic Cabooses

Ride in one of our historic cabooses full of rich history in connection to our Michigan railroading heritage! Lower and upper cupola level seating will be provided as well as an onboard car host serving as your educational guide during these short trips.

New Buffalo Turntable

Your train will travel right onto our historic turntable and perform a 360-degree spin. This more than a century year old artifact was once a staple in the Pere Marquette yard of New Buffalo during the steam era. Our own 1225 even used this structure on a regular basis!

Disclaimer

During Public Events: No advance reservation, first come serve tickets will only be purchased at our Welcome Center on the day of the event only. All trains depart every 60-minutes beginning at 10:00am. The excursions will be operated by our diesel-powered switcher.

During Private Events: Trip must be scheduled in advance with an approximate headcount. The excursion will be operated by our diesel-powered switcher. Limit 2 trips per event. Tickets will be purchased in our Welcome Center on the day of, or can be added to your Private Event Package.
