Steaming Ahead in 2025 with PM1225 and Superheater Repairs
On November 23, 2024 our 83 year old steam locomotive, Pere Marquette 1225, was taken out of service due to concerns with the locomotive's superheater units. This unexpected decision came just four weeks after a successful weekend of Cadillac Fall Color Tours and on the eve of our 20th anniversary of North Pole Express season.
The superheater work began almost immediately after the wrap up of North Pole Express. Upon disassembling PM1225’s smokebox to extract the 52 superheater units, an inspection to assess the condition of several of the 275 tubes and flues within the boiler was conducted. Randomly selected tubes and flues were removed, and measurements were taken for strength calculations. It was determined that these tube samples were nearing the minimum allowable thickness for safety. The backshop team shared their findings with SRI’s board of directors during a roundtable discussion, leading to a unanimous decision to remove all tubes, clean and inspect the boiler, and purchase and install new tubes. This approach was the best and, most importantly, the safest way to extend the operational life of PM1225.
From January 2022 to October 2023, the Steam Railroading Institute undertook one of its most intriguing projects: a complete rebuild of the suspension, braking, running gear, valve gear, and drive gear systems of the 534,200-pound steam locomotive. With the locomotive ready to roll, we now needed to ensure the boiler was prepared as well.
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) oversees all railroad matters, including the maintenance of steam locomotive PM1225. In 2004, the FRA established new maintenance specifications for the care and operation of the nation’s steam locomotives, particularly the 1,472 Service Day Inspection, commonly referred to as the “15-year rebuild.” This regulation dictates how long a steam locomotive may operate before requiring a comprehensive boiler inspection.
Anticipation is building among steam train enthusiasts and our dedicated community as we work tirelessly to bring Pere Marquette 1225 back to life. The intricate process of restoring this historic locomotive to its former glory is not just about the mechanical components; it's about preserving a piece of history that connects us to the golden age of railroading.
In addition to several Open Houses, we are planning educational programs aimed at inspiring the next generation of railroad enthusiasts. Through interactive workshops and guided tours of our facilities during summer open houses, we hope to ignite a passion for steam locomotives and engineering in young minds, ensuring that the legacy of PM1225 continues for years to come.
We are deeply grateful for the continued support from our members, volunteers, and the broader community. Your enthusiasm and dedication are what drives us to overcome challenges and achieve milestones. Together, we are not just preserving a locomotive, we are keeping history alive and inspiring future generations to dream big and explore the rich tapestry of our railroading heritage.
Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the exciting return of Pere Marquette 1225 as she embarks on new adventures and creates cherished memories for everyone who steps aboard.
